英国の「インド太平洋」シフト/UK’s “Indo-Pacific” Shift
ブレグジット後の英国は、新たな国家戦略として、海洋国家としてのアイデンティティを再確認し、日本の「自由で開かれたインド太平洋（FOIP）」戦略に深くコミットしています。これは、中国の台頭や海洋秩序の不安定化といった共通の脅威認識に基づいています。英国は、米国への過度な依存を避け、独自の安全保障ネットワークを構築しようとしており、その最重要パートナーとして日本を位置づけています。日本は、この英国の戦略を冷静に分析し、自国の国益を最大化するための戦略的な役割を果たす必要があります。
Post-Brexit Britain, as part of its new national strategy, is reaffirming its identity as a maritime nation and is deeply committed to Japan’s “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” strategy. This is based on a shared recognition of threats such as the rise of China and the destabilization of maritime order. The United Kingdom seeks to avoid excessive dependence on the United States and build its own security network, positioning Japan as its most important partner. Japan needs to calmly analyze this British strategy and play a strategic role to maximize its own national interests.

日本とイギリスが築いてきた深い信頼関係の根底には、両国に共通する精神的価値観があります。それは、日本の「武士道」と英国の「騎士道」です。一見、遠く離れた文化に起源を持つ両者ですが、その核となる思想には驚くべき共通点が見られます。

The modern “Anglo-Japanese Alliance” encompasses a much wider range of cooperative fields. In addition to defense cooperation, symbolized by the development of the next-generation fighter jet (GCAP), collaboration in cutting-edge fields such as economic security, cyber, AI, and space is essential. The Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA), which facilitates mutual visits between the forces of both countries, is a concrete first step in this direction. This multi-layered cooperation forms a solid foundation for addressing modern geopolitical challenges.
今後、より良い日英関係を築くためには、日本が受動的な姿勢から脱却することが重要です。英国の外交は「冷徹な国益最優先の現実主義」に基づいています。日本は、英国に「利用される」という被害者意識を持つのではなく、対等な戦略パートナーとして、自らも英国を「使いこなす」という能動的な姿勢を持つべきです。両国の国益を冷静にすり合わせ、共通の目標に向かって協力することで、この新たな「日英同盟」は、地球規模の安定にも貢献できるでしょう。
To build a better Japan-UK relationship in the future, it is important for Japan to break away from its passive stance. British diplomacy is based on “cold-blooded, national interest-first realism.” Instead of having a victim mentality of being “used” by the UK, Japan should adopt an active stance of “using” the UK as well, as an equal strategic partner. By calmly aligning the national interests of both countries and working together towards common goals, this new “Japan-UK alliance” can contribute to global stability.
