この物語は、東日本大震災後に行われた、ある自衛隊幹部の方の講演内容を参考にさせていただきました。「武士道2025」の「恩には恩で報いる」に加筆しリライトしたものです。
This story is based on the content of a lecture given by a Self-Defense Forces executive after the Great East Japan Earthquake. It is a rewrite with additions to “Repay kindness with kindness” from “Bushido 2025.”
巨大津波の爪痕/Traces of a giant tsunami
2011年3月、東日本大震災の巨大津波は、東北の港町に深い爪痕を残して去っていきました。早朝から、自衛隊員や消防隊員たちが泥と瓦礫の中で懸命に行方不明者の捜索にあたっています。その様子を、30代前半の女性が遠くから祈るように見つめていました。
In March 2011, the massive tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake left deep scars on the port towns of Tohoku. From early morning, Self-Defense Force personnel and firefighters worked tirelessly in the mud and rubble, searching for the missing. A woman in her early thirties watched the scene from afar, as if praying.
「おーい、こっちだ！」 ”Hey, this way!”
一人の隊員の声に、他の隊員たちが駆け寄ります。瓦礫の中から見つかった遺体に、隊員たちは深く頭を垂れ、静かに手を合わせました。彼女もまた駆け寄り、我が子ではないことを確かめては、そっと手を合わせます。この日、このエリアで見つかった遺体は八体で、損傷が激しいものばかりでした。夕暮れが迫り、捜索活動の終了が告げられると、彼女は肩を落とし、重い足取りで家路につきました。
At the voice of one squad member, the other members rush over. To the body found in the rubble, the members deeply bow their heads and quietly clasp their hands in prayer. She, too, rushes over, and after confirming that it is not her child, quietly clasps her hands in prayer. On this day, eight bodies were found in this area, most of them severely damaged. As dusk approaches and the end of the search is announced, she drops her shoulders and trudges heavily towards home.
翌日も、またその次の日も、捜索は続きました。そして彼女もまた、毎日、一縷の望みを胸に捜索を見守り続けます。
The search continued the next day, and the day after that. And she, too, continued to watch the search every day, with a glimmer of hope in her heart.
生まれ変わったら…./When you are reborn: ….
ある日、遠くの隊員が叫びました。「おおーい、こっちに来てくれ！」 隊員たちが駆け寄り、その中の一人が彼女のもとへ走りながら告げます。「お母さん、もしかしたら翔太くんです」 事前に渡してあった顔写真と服装の情報、そしてその服と思われるものが瓦礫の奥にはっきりと見えたのです。
One day, a distant team member shouted, “Hey, come over here!” The team members rushed over, and one of them, running towards her, said, “Mom, it might be Shota.” The information about his face and clothing that she had given them beforehand, and what appeared to be that clothing, was clearly visible in the depths of the rubble.
長く、辛い時間の末、彼女は変わり果てた息子と対面しました。抱きしめた骸は、生前の面影をほとんどとどめていません。それでも彼女は、その小さな体を強く抱きしめ、涙ながらに語りかけました。
After a long and agonizing time, she was reunited with her son, who was utterly changed. The husk she embraced bore almost no resemblance to his former self. Still, she held his small body tightly, and spoke to him through her tears.
「翔太、ようやく会えたね。お母さん、毎日この日を待っていたんだよ。自衛隊のお兄さんたちが、翔太に会わせてくれたんだよ。皆さんには『ありがとう』って言おうね。そして翔太……生まれ変わったら、あなたも自衛隊のお兄さんたちのように、たくさんの人を助ける優しい人になろうね」
”Shota, I’ve finally met you. Your mother has been waiting for this day. The Self-Defense Force members helped me meet Shota. Let’s say thank you to them. And Shota… when you are reborn, become a kind person who helps many people, just like the Self-Defense Force members.”
周囲の自衛隊員たちは息子を抱きしめる母親に敬礼し、全員からすすり泣く声が聞こえました。母は悲しみを押し殺し、一人一人の隊員に深く頭を下げます。
The surrounding Self-Defense Force personnel saluted the mother holding her son, and sobs could be heard from everyone. The mother suppressed her grief and bowed deeply to each and every member.
「ありがとうございました。本当にほんとうに、ありがとうございました……ようやく翔太を家に連れて帰れます」 何度も頭を下げる彼女の姿は、どんな苦しみや困難に直面しても他者への感謝と敬意、そして恩を忘れない日本の母の姿でした。
”Thank you. Thank you so, so much… I can finally bring Shota home.” The figure of her bowing repeatedly was the image of a Japanese mother who, no matter what suffering or difficulties she faced, never forgot gratitude, respect, and indebtedness to others.
そして月日は流れ/And the days and months passed.
あの日、あの母の姿は、自衛隊員たちの胸に深く刻まれていました。悲しみの中にあっても失われなかった希望の言葉を、彼らは決して忘れなかったのです。
That day, that image of the mother was deeply etched in the hearts of the Self-Defense Force members. They never forgot her words of hope, which were not lost even in the midst of sorrow.
202X年、あの日翔太くんの遺体を発見した一人の隊員が、地元の中学校で講演会を開くことになりました。震災の記憶を伝え、命の尊さを語るためです。
In 202X, one of the officers who discovered Shota-kun’s body that day will hold a lecture at a local junior high school. The purpose is to convey the memory of the earthquake and talk about the preciousness of life.
講演後、生徒たちの質問に答えていると、一人の少年が手を挙げました。澄んだ瞳が、まっすぐに隊員を見つめています。
After the lecture, as I was answering the students’ questions, one boy raised his hand. Clear eyes stared straight at the team member.
「あの、自衛隊員さんは、どうして自衛隊に入ろうと思ったんですか？」
”Um, why did you decide to join the Self-Defense Forces?”
隊員はマイクを握り直し、少しだけ間をおいて、ゆっくりと話し始めました。あの日、瓦礫の中で見つけた小さな命と、その命を抱きしめた母親の姿。そして彼女が語りかけた「恩には恩で報いる」という言葉を。
The team member readjusted the microphone, paused for a moment, and then slowly began to speak. He spoke of the small life he found in the rubble that day, and the figure of the mother embracing that life. And the words she spoke: “Repay kindness with kindness.”
「私たちは、あの日、翔太くんという5歳の男の子の遺体を見つけました。彼の母親は、どんなに辛い状況でも、僕たちに感謝の言葉を伝えてくれました。そして、翔太くんに語りかけていたんです。『生まれ変わったら、自衛隊員になって、たくさんの人を助ける人になろうね』と」
”We found the body of a five-year-old boy named Shota on that day. His mother, despite the difficult circumstances, expressed her gratitude to us. And she was talking to Shota, saying”, “When you are reborn, become a member of the Self-Defense Forces and help many people.”
会場は静まり返っていました。隊員は、少年の瞳をまっすぐに見つめ、言葉を続けます。
The venue fell silent. The team member looked directly into the boy’s eyes and continued speaking.
「私たちは、あの日、翔太くんのお母さんから、勇気と希望をもらいました。そして、自分たちの仕事の意味を、改めて噛みしめたのです。だから今も、誰かの希望になれるようにと、心を込めて働いています」隊員の話が終わり深々とお辞儀をしました。拍手がひとつ、ふたつ……次の瞬間、あっという間に拍手は会場いっぱいに満ちました。
We received courage and hope from Shota-Kun’s mother that day. And we reaffirmed the meaning of our work. That’s why we still work with all our hearts, hoping to be someone’s hope. The team member finished speaking and bowed deeply. One, two claps… The next moment, applause quickly filled the venue.
奇跡の再会/Miraculous reunion
講演が終わり、生徒たちが帰り始める中、先ほどの少年が隊員のもとに駆け寄ってきました。
As the lecture ended and the students began to leave, the boy from before rushed over to the staff member.
「あの、僕、高橋翔太って言います」
”Um, I’m Shota Takahashi”
少年は、少しはにかんだように言いました。隊員は息をのみ、少年の顔をまじまじと見ました。澄んだ瞳は、あの日の希望そのものでした。
The boy said with a slight smile. The crew member gasped and stared intently at the boy’s face. His clear eyes were the very embodiment of the hope from that day.
「僕のお母さんが、よく話してくれるんです。僕がまだ生まれる前、震災の津波で死んじゃった兄の翔太が、生まれ変わったら自衛隊員になるって、自衛隊のお兄さんたちと約束したんだって。だから、僕、自衛隊に入りたいんです」
”My mom often tells me that before I was born, my brother Shota, who died in the tsunami of the earthquake, promised the Self-Defense Force guys that he would be reborn as a Self-Defense Force member. That’s why I want to join the Self-Defense Force”.
隊員は、目の前の少年が、母の願いと兄の志を確かに受け継いでいることを知りました。翔太という名は、兄から授けられた名であり、母の祈りそのものだったのです。
The team members knew that the boy before them had certainly inherited his mother’s wish and his brother’s aspirations. The name Shota was a name given to him by his brother, and it was the very embodiment of his mother’s prayer.
「翔太君、君は、きっと素晴らしい自衛隊員になるよ。そして、君のお兄さんと、お母さんの願いは、必ず叶う」少年は、隊員の腕の中で静かに頷きました。
”Shota, you will surely become a wonderful member of the Self-Defense Forces. And the wishes of your brother and your mother will surely come true”. The boy quietly nodded in the member’s arms.
母が新たに産まれた次男に兄の名を授けたとき、そこには多少の迷いがあった。それは兄への祈りと弟への願いが交差するひと時でした。絶望から希望へ。過去から未来へ。「翔太」という名を、「死と再生」「喪失と希望」の象徴として生かそう。そう決意したとき、母の迷いは、すべての愛を「翔太」に注ぐ希望へと変わったのです。
When my mother bestowed the name of her late son upon her newly born second son, a trace of hesitation lingered in her heart.It was a moment where prayers for the elder and hopes for the younger quietly intertwined.From despair to hope.From past to future.
She resolved to let the name “Shota” live on as a symbol of death and rebirth, of loss and hope.And in that moment of resolve, her hesitation transformed into a radiant hope—one that poured all her love into “Shota.”
そして、「恩には恩で報いる」という感謝の真心は、新たな命の中に生き続けていることを証す、奇跡のような再会を果たしたのです。
Thus, the heartfelt gratitude of “repaying kindness with kindness” led to a miraculous reunion.
